SE 450 Approaches to Managing Challenging Behaviors

This course addresses emotional and behavioral problems related to public school programs. It is designed to help pre-service teachers structure individual remedial programs for students with challenging behaviors that adversely impact their ability, and that of their peers, to make adequate progress toward standards- and IEP-based academic goals. The focus is on practical strategies and techniques that can be implemented in general and special education settings, and which can be used for all students, both with and without disability diagnoses. The course includes topics such as data-based decision making, Behavior Intervention Plans, and a variety of behavior management approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Interventions, Trauma-Informed Classroom Management Strategies, Social-Emotional Learning, Self-Regulation and Executive Function, and Applied Behavior Analysis. In this blended course, students are expected to demonstrate understanding of course content through face-to face class meetings, as well as online discussions, written responses, and quizzes.
