Field experience is required. A course that focuses on current recommended best practices for culturally responsive environments and approaches to teaching. The course is designed to help pre-service teachers create and maintain caring, respectful classroom communities where all learners feel safe, valued, respected, and empowered, and can fully engage in the learning process. The course will include traditional approaches to well-managed classrooms such as classroom/material organization, establishing and implementing rules and procedures, managing student work, proactive approaches to preventing challenging behaviors, effective communication, and managing teacher stress. It will expand on these themes by examining the role of culture in teaching and learning, recognizing assumptions and implicit bias that can influence the way teachers interact with students from different cultures. In this course, pre-service teachers will learn how to become familiar with the cultures and backgrounds of all students in their care, and what it means to be a culturally responsive educator.
