EL 630 Mathematics Assessment, Curriculum and Literacy

Registration Restriction: Participants must be current holders of a valid Alabama teaching certificate, and otherwise meet state eligibility requirements for a mathematics coaching position. This program requires field experience in a real-world teaching environment and at least three years of experience as an Elementary teacher. This course focuses on supporting the development of mathematics through integrating and contextualizing literacy with early childhood and elementary students. This course is designed to strengthen mathematical concepts through the teaching and learning of literacy through a holistic approach that supports educators in (a) understanding how literacy practices are integrated into mathematical work, (b) analyzing mathematical work including tasks, texts, and talk to determine what literacy practices are required for students engaging in the work, (c) examining mathematical strands that are closely tied to literacy practices, and (d) developing skills with teaching practices that support and make explicit mathematical literacy for all students. The other large component of this course examines how skill with literacy practices (reading, writing, interpreting, speaking, and listening) in each of these mathematical areas supports our early childhood and elementary students by focusing on pedagogy that develops mathematically literate students. Such areas of support are based on various assessment data (i.e., Screener, Diagnostic, Formative, and Benchmark Assessments) that focus on Number Sequence, Cardinality, Oral and Written Names for Numbers, Subitizing, Number Relationships, Word Problems, Connection with Arithmetic Operations, and Spatial Reasoning. Students will conduct all aforementioned assessments and utilize obtained diagnostic assessment data to develop Mathematics Differentiated Instructional Plans by employing a multi-tiered system of support.
