This is a course covering definitions, description, characteristics, and the potential of learners with exceptionalities. Practices for teaching, collaboration among professionals and paraprofessionals, working with parents and families, and addressing cultural issues will be covered within this course. We will identify approaches to teaching students who receive special education services and learn about evidence-based practices that have been shown to be effective in helping these students make progress in their educational programs. Topics include key principles of special education such as people-first language, equity and equality, bias and perceptions of disabilities. Teacher candidates will learn how to make education accessible to all students, how to use Multi-Tiered systems of Support (MTSS) to support struggling learners, how to differentiate instruction to meet individual student needs, and how to select and use appropriate assessment tools.
