A general survey course which addresses historical and legal aspects of Special Education services, and provides a rich overview of identification, prevalence, characteristics, and etiology of disabilities included in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The course includes the impact of disabilities on academic, social, emotional, and behavioral performances and an introduction to current evidence-based practices related to assessment, curriculum modification, collaboration with other professionals and with families, placement options and general approaches to support individuals with disabilities defined in the IDEA 2004, Includes Lee v. Macon "Addressing Disproportionality in Alabama Schools" training as required by the Alabama State Department of Education.
