This course serves as an introduction to and overview of the various systems of the English language, with a particular focus on teaching English as a second language (ESL) or English as a foreign language (EFL) to adult learners. It explores (l) second language acquisition theories and adult learners' second language learning, (2) the influence of the first language on second language acquisition, and (3) English phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, and pragmatics. Candidates will have an opportunity to compare the systems of English to those of other languages in order to identify similar and contrasting features and areas of challenge for adult ESL/EFL learners. This course also addresses implications for teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in adult ESL/EFL classrooms.
