ESOL 328 Introduction to Linguistics for Teachers of Young English Learners

This course provides an introduction to language as a system, with a particular focus on teaching English as a second language (ESL) or English as a foreign language (EFL) to young and adolescent learners (ages 4-18). Main course topics include (1) young and adolescent ESL/EFL learners' first and second language acquisition, (2) children's oral language development and emergent literacy development, (3) the fundamentals of linguistics (e.g., phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax, and pragmatics), (4) pedagogical implications for teaching oral language and emergent literacy skills to young ESL/EFL learners, and (5) implications for teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to adolescent English learners in ESL/EFL classrooms.
