This course is designed to develop the knowledge and skill-based understanding of pre-service teachers as it relates to the best practices of teaching early literacy skills. In this course, students will understand the importance of oral language, print awareness, letter knowledge, phonological awareness, phonics, and why it is essential to incorporate multi-sensory instructional strategies. Students will learn how to apply this information to students on various academic learning levels. This course will also support the Literacy Act through the COX Campus Modules. These online modules support the learners understanding of how a child's spoken language, including phonological awareness, must be combined with alphabet knowledge and print awareness to build a solid foundation for learning to read. Students will be awarded a certificate on completion of all modules. Field experiences may be required.
