ER 319 Structured Literacy in Early Childhood Education

This course develops pre-service early childhood educators' knowledge of theories and developmentally appropriate practices for structured literacy instruction. Students will increase and enhance their understanding of the foundational pillars of literacy: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. In alignment with the Alabama Literacy Act, students will also increase their knowledge of multi-sensory instruction strategies. Alabama's Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), printing and cursive instruction, appropriate instruction for students with Dyslexia, and the developmental stages of emergent writing instruction. Pre-service teachers' pedagogical knowledge will be enhanced and assessed through guided and purposeful field-based assignments.
